GREETINGS

GREETINGS IN THE NAME OF KERALA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS' ASSOCIATION

Dear Friends,

"This is a small step for me, but a giant leap for mankind". This statement of Niel Amstrong on the moon has inspired millions through many decades. Any big venture begins with a small step. As our president Fr.George Nedumkallel has mentioned in his introductory statement, we also had a diffident step, but our achievements have been many. Ours was a long journey and we could stride over all our difficulties. The ardent efforts of our secretary Mani Subrhamanian and our committee members produced excellent results. Almost all our members got NOC and affiliation, after marathon struggle.

Now it is time for consolidation and we have no space for relaxation. We face new problems every day. CBSE/ICSE education was a distant dream for parents and students in the past. The rich class mkigrated to Ootty and Kodaikkanal. But in the wake of a renaissance in Kerala, CBSE/ICSE schools were started by enterprising educationists in all nook and corner in our State. Even very poor children could afford to study in such institutions.And today these schools are seen as enemies both by the Government and the people. We have to analyse the reasons. There is a concerted effort to malign the great acheivements and contributions of dedicated managers and thousands of teachers who toiled hard to develop these band of schools.

It is time for us to unite and uphold our values. Let us all march forward to a better phase of promising education for our children. We will highlight various issues in these pages hereafter.

President’s Message

Genesis

Kerala Independant Schools’ Association abbreviated as KISA was born of a dire need of obtaining No Objection Certificate from the Government of Kerala. A group of managers and principals scattered at different regions of Kerala gathered together with one single objective in mind – NOC. This movement took an immediate momentum and was able to bring about 75 schools under the umbrella of KISA. Thus KISA was born and has been growing quantitatively and qualitatively.

Saga of struggles

It is beyond doubt that KISA was the sole association which was in the war front to fight against the injustice inflicted by the then government. We ran from pillar to post, knocked at the doors of the officials and bureaucrats for their patient listening. A closed mind can never lend a listening ear much less a compassionate hearing. The govt. wanted to wipe us away from the school map of Kerala. They tortured us in every possible way through the govt. orders, tried to weaken us , challenged us face to face and finally pushed us to the court. We are sons of our Motherland India, where we still uphold democracy and its glories. The cases were argued in the High Court and in the Supreme Court. We were burdened with heavy bills to be cleared and we looked for likeminded associations to ease out our financial hardship but our hope was in vain. Finally, the apex court of India pronounced the judgment in favour of the schools. The govt. was forced to reverse its decision and started to issue NOC. A feeling of ‘ freedom at mid-night’. For quite a many this may be a revelation but this is how the episode ended.

KISA today

We have not stopped our sojourn. We still have dreams to be realised. Today we plan and execute programmes for excellence and efficiency in the field of education. We are committed to our stake holders- our parents community, our staff and students and the society by and large. We are aware of their vital role in forming our future generation and hence we empower them to face the emerging challenges in the changing learning landscape. We march forward without losing sight of our vision of imparting an education characterized by superior quality, high principles and a freedom, enabling them to become responsible, self-reliant and wise decision makers. I would like to conclude my message by quoting a few lines from Robert Frost:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep
